Prevent Cystitis and Urinary Tract Infections
Nothing is guaranteed to prevent cystitis, but the NHS recommends the following steps:
Do
Don't
- Increase your fluid intake
- Wear loose clothing and cotton underwear
- Wipe front to back, not back to front after going to the toilet
- Pass urine as soon as you feel the need to, instead of holding on
- Pass urine immediately after sex
- Always empty your bladder fully when you go to the toilet
- Wash your genital area and your hands before and after sex
- Take cranberry based products daily
- Use perfumed bubble bath, soap or talcum powder around your genitals
- Drink alcohol, tea, coffee, fruit juice or spicy foods as these may make your symptoms worse
If you get cystitis three or more times a year, your GP may give you a course of antibiotics to keep at home so you can start taking them as soon as you know you’re getting a bout of cystitis. However the NHS reports that if symptoms are mild your GP may prefer not to prescribe antibiotics over concerns of antibiotic resistance. This is when the bacteria that cause cystitis adapt and learn to survive despite the use of antibiotics. Over time, this means that the treatment becomes less effective.
Supplements, what's the evidence?
There's good evidence to show that taking capsules containing 36mg PAC cranberry extract or 200mg hibiscus extract are effective in preventing cystitis from coming back. hI-Cran® has the benefit of containing both of these products at the recommended dosage. Avoid cranberry juice containing lots of sugar, as sugar can encourage bacteria to grow.
